FASHIONABLE "WASTE"

When we grow up, society suddenly means for us to be so responsible, composed and more deep in thought and work over paying up those unceasing bills. Dare to play care free games like the rich Ugandan games we grew up engaging in including, "omweso," "mama ne taata" which is the same as "daddy and mummy" and "kwiso bando" which is the famous hide and seek and you might be labelled immature.

If you don't go against the vain need for public acceptance, to get out there and play every so often, your inner adventure child is burnt out, yearning to get active. Not all hope is lost though, because play can be channeled through other bits of our adult lifestyle including;- playing dress up!!

Clothes are such a vibe! You get to pick and choose, mix and match, patch and tear, there's even such a thing as colour blocking in this play space. What you're going through, your emotions, body parts you are most confident about, your mood, your style can all be expressed by grabbing some fabrics and simply donning them.

Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Prada, FashionNova are all brands that hit high on quality but there are those in my Uganda that scream, soulful!!! Uganda's diverse cultures passed on through many generations have not left their fashion world behind. The Baganda tribe of Central Uganda in particular have me mesmerised because they make some of their most prestigious signature outfits from what others would deem as food waste! Talk about having zero tolerance to wasting food!

These set of humans very lovingly and patiently make a special kind of cloth called "bark cloth" out of the hides of livestock like cows and goats. The beautiful flat finish of this cloth is used as a huge cloth accessory, giving one a very royal look. These special humans also make naturally ombre coloured, coarse textured looking jewellery, baby dolls and jewellery boxes, using the fibre of banana trees! If this is not awesome, I officially give up on finding out what that term means!

With this tradition, the "Baganda tribe" have proved that if we really meant it, we could all have a more sustainable world, with each natural system feeding into another and not needing of any extra unnecessary toxicity that many of the man made processes have resulted in.

EQUALLY UNEQUAL

They call it fast food, I call it a saviour on that rare day, with a quick fix when there's nothing else to eat in the scary dark hour. ...
