BACK TO THE BASICS

Today, I chopped my vegetables as is usually the routine to making an almost perfect family meal(coz ain't nothing perfect in this life aside God). As I chopped, diced some and grated others, I noticed how all these little foods had all been bought from different places to make their way to my kitchen. Some from the fresh food markets, some from the supermarket aisles and others gifted from loved ones during the festive season. I started to wonder about all the trouble, time and energy it actually took to get all these beautifully coloured ones including purple cabbage, cucumber, lettuce, cherry tomatoes and carrots. As I wondered, I happily drenched them into that salad bowl because the rainbow effect they gave me was a "dream come true" kinda situation for me. That wonder thought led me to a big resolution in my world, new year equals the beginning of backyard food gardening. If I can plant as many vegetables as can be, right in my yard, it would just be literally footsteps to harvesting them, straight to the kitchen sink, all at their freshest ever. There would be no more traffic jam, no more boda men insults as you travel to the market, no more push and pull fights with the locals at the markets to get these beautifully coloured ones. Best of all, I just might have an all year round supply of different vegetables in my kitchen any second I want them. And that, ladies and gentlemen has birthed for me my own backyard garden with my favourite herbs and vegetables like coriander, chilli, mint, lettuce, purple cabbage, white cabbage, lavender and pineapple mint. I am using a lot of self teaching and inquiries from farming expert friends to back me up, am going back to the basics! Growing my food and cooking all its goodness for my family and I. I want to know my food better. How about you?

EQUALLY UNEQUAL

They call it fast food, I call it a saviour on that rare day, with a quick fix when there's nothing else to eat in the scary dark hour. ...
